The Slate

The Slate

Usually at the first of the year, there is a feeling of a clean slate.  I am not looking for a clean slate, just a slate that is more suited to my life.  There are many things I would never want to remove from my slate, so it will never be “clean.”  There are several things, however, that I wish weren’t there, and I realize that I have the power to make changes.  In all of the changes, deletions, and additions, I am amazed by the grace of a Higher Power I know as God.

What I have learned in the past several months is that your Higher Power may be the sunshine, a group of friends, or the same God in whom I believe. What is important (religion aside for the moment) is that we recognize that there is something/someone bigger and stronger than we are.  With that knowledge and assurance, conquering the rocky roads becomes much less frightening.

As 2012 begins, I am going to measure things in life by The Serenity Prayer:

“God, Grant me the serenity to ACCEPT the things I CANNOT CHANGE,
the courage to CHANGE the things I CAN,
and the wisdom to KNOW the DIFFERENCE.” (emphasis mine)

You can do the same!

For instance, you are with a group of people who are gossipy gals, into everyone’s business.  Does it bother you?  Well, You cannot change the fact that they are gossipy gals and into everyone else’s business.  You can change several things, though:  your being with them when they talk/act that way, your chiming into the conversation, your remaining silent about how it makes you feel.  The easiest change, with the least disruption is to CHOOSE to remove yourself from the group.   If you CHOOSE to stay, then you must CHOOSE how you’ll handle the situation while you are with them.  Regardless of what happens, you are making a CHOICE.

Yes, we have some control in life.  Isn’t that wonderful news!  Happy New Year–I’m choosing to stop typing and get ready for church.  I am, I am, really I am.
